HBS Leadership Essay 2026-27: How to Write It & Samples

HBS Leadership Essay 2026-27: How to Write It & Samples

How do you write the HBS leadership essay in 250 words? Choose one specific moment where things went wrong, show what you did with the people around you, and finish with what the experience changed about how you lead. This guide on how to write the HBS leadership essay uses a single product-launch story to show what an HBS leadership essay sample looks like, line by line.

For the current HBS MBA 2026–27 application cycle (Class of 2029, matriculating in 2027), the leadership-focused essay prompt is:

The HBS essay 2026-2027 set has three prompts: Business-Minded (300 words), Leadership-Focused (250 words) and Growth-Oriented (250 words). This guide covers the Harvard Business School leadership essay, which is the second of the three.

Harvard Business School gives you just 250 words for its leadership essay. That sounds like plenty until you actually try to tell a meaningful leadership story in 250 words. The mistake I see most often is applicants trying to fit an entire project into those 250 words. They explain what the project was, what went wrong, what they did, what the team achieved and then add two lines at the end about what they learnt about leadership. The result is usually a compressed résumé bullet rather than a leadership story.
The better way to approach the essay is to remember what HBS is actually trying to understand: how do you lead when things don’t go according to plan?

That question sits underneath the whole HBS leadership-focused essay. The prompt also asks how you invest in others, so the story you choose has to show both: how you lead, and what you did for the people you led.

Harvard Business School (HBS) Leadership Essay with Sample

Start with the Crisis

A good leadership story needs some tension. If everything went according to plan, there isn’t much opportunity to show me how you actually lead. So don’t start with something like, “I have always believed that great leaders empower their teams to overcome challenges.” It tells me nothing about you, and I could put the same sentence in almost anyone’s essay.
Instead, put me straight into the problem. For example:

Much better. Now I want to know what happened. The next sentence can establish the stakes:

In two sentences, I understand the problem and why it matters. Notice that you haven’t told me that you are calm under pressure, decisive or resilient. You don’t need to. The situation should create the opportunity for you to demonstrate those qualities.
If you’re wondering how to start an HBS leadership essay, this is the pattern: a specific moment, a real stake and no opening statement about your leadership philosophy.

Give Me Context, But Don’t Turn it into a Project Description

Once you’ve established the crisis, I need enough context to understand what you were dealing with. But this is where many applicants go wrong. They start explaining the company, the project, the team structure and their responsibilities.
For example:

There is nothing technically wrong with this sentence. It is just not doing much for your leadership essay. I would rather know that your engineers wanted to delay the launch while the commercial team wanted to proceed with a limited version. Now there is a leadership problem. You have people with different priorities, and you have to bring them towards a decision. That is much more interesting than telling me how many people were on your team.

Your context should answer three basic questions: What went wrong? Why did it matter? And what made it difficult for you as a leader? Once I understand that, move on. You only have 250 words, so don’t spend half of them explaining the project.
This is also why the HBS leadership essay 250 words limit rewards restraint. Every sentence of background is a sentence you can’t spend on your own leadership.

Don’t Tell Me What Kind of Leader You are. Show me.

This is probably the most important point in the entire essay. Applicants love sentences like, “I am an inclusive leader who believes in giving my team ownership.” Please don’t waste 15 words telling me this. Show me.

For example:

Now I can see something about how you lead. You didn’t simply make the decision yourself. You gave people ownership of different parts of the problem.

Or perhaps:

Again, you haven’t said, “I develop people.” But I can see that you do.

This is what I mean by show, don’t tell. Don’t tell me you’re collaborative; show me what you did to bring people together. Don’t tell me you’re a good mentor; show me the moment when you helped someone take on something they weren’t confident doing. Don’t tell me you’re calm under pressure; show me how you behaved when everyone else was panicking.

Read those two examples again. Together they work like a mini HBS leadership essay sample: each line is specific, each shows a decision or an action, and neither describes a personality trait. They are a useful model when you read other Harvard MBA leadership essay examples too.

The Middle is Where Most Leadership Essays Lose Adcoms

Getting the opening right is relatively easy. The problem usually comes in the middle. The applicant establishes a great crisis, tells me what they did, and then suddenly jumps to: “We delayed the launch by three days, fixed the issue and successfully launched.”
Okay. But where did you actually lead?

The middle of the essay needs to show what happened between you and your team. Imagine that one of your junior product managers had identified that 17% of affected customers would face a different problem if you launched early. She was hesitant to challenge the commercial team because she was new. You could write:

That tells me much more than “I mentored a junior colleague.” I can see what you did, I can see the impact it had on someone else, and I can see that the person’s work influenced the outcome.

That is what makes it a leadership story.

This is where many HBS essay mistakes happen. The story is strong, but what the applicant did with other people never makes it onto the page.

Look For the People in Your Story

When you edit your essay, underline every sentence that involves another person. If almost every sentence starts with “I analysed,” “I decided,” “I created,” “I presented” or “I delivered,” you may have written an achievement essay rather than a leadership essay.

Ask yourself: Who did I influence? Who did I develop? Who disagreed with me? Who took ownership because of something I did? Did someone become more confident, capable or independent because I led them?

You don’t need all of these in one essay. But there should be some evidence that your leadership extended beyond yourself. Sometimes the most revealing part of a leadership story is not that you solved the problem. It is that you helped someone else solve part of it.

If mentorship is part of your story, that’s fine, but be careful with HBS leadership essay mentorship examples. “I mentored a junior colleague” is a familiar line, so the specific moment you helped someone take on something new is what makes your essay different.

Solving the Problem is not the Same as Leading Through It

This distinction is particularly important for high-performing applicants. You may have been the person who found the answer. Great. That demonstrates problem-solving. It doesn’t automatically demonstrate leadership.
Suppose you discovered the security flaw yourself and stayed up all night fixing it. That’s a good professional achievement. But if you’re writing a leadership essay, I’d want to know what you did with the people around you once you realised there was a problem.

Did you redistribute responsibilities? Did you give someone ownership? Did you calm an anxious team? Did you convince people to abandon an approach they were invested in? Did you help a junior colleague challenge a senior stakeholder? Did you create enough clarity for the team to make a decision without depending entirely on you?
Those are the details that make me understand how you lead.

Don’t Let the Business Outcome Take Over the Essay

Of course, tell me what happened in the end. If you launched successfully, say so. If you avoided a major customer loss, say so. If the team adopted a new way of working because of the experience, even better.
But don’t spend 50 words celebrating the outcome. Your résumé can already tell HBS that you delivered results. The essay needs to tell me how you got people there.

A résumé might say:

Fine. The essay should tell me what that leadership actually looked like.

Your Final Line Doesn’t Need to be Profound

The conclusion is where applicants sometimes become overly philosophical. You don’t need to end with a quote-worthy statement about leadership. Just tell me what the experience changed in your understanding of leadership.

For example:

This works because the essay has already shown me that behaviour. The reflection is simply putting words to what I have just read.
That’s the key: don’t introduce a leadership lesson in the last sentence that wasn’t demonstrated anywhere in the story.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How long is the HBS leadership essay?

250 words. The Business-Minded essay is 300 words, and the Growth-Oriented essay is also 250.

Can I use the same story in two HBS essays?

It’s better not to. Treat each essay as a fresh chance to show HBS something different about you.

When are the HBS Round 2 essays due?

For the Class of 2029, the Round 2 deadline is listed as January 5, 2027. Check the HBS admissions site for the latest dates before you plan around it.

What is the biggest mistake in the HBS leadership essay?

Writing an achievement story instead of a leadership story. If every sentence is about what you did alone, the essay doesn’t yet show how you lead or invest in others.

Can I write about a non-work experience in the HBS leadership essay?

Yes. HBS has said leadership takes many forms in many contexts, so a story from a community project, college or family life can work. What matters is that it shows how you lead and how you invest in others.

How many examples should I include in the HBS leadership essay?

One story told well is the safest choice. Some applicants use two shorter examples, roughly 120 words each, but with only 250 words a second example has to be brief and add something the first one doesn’t.
