Part One: The Definitive Guide to Cracking IIM A PGPX Interview

Every year, I see applicants prepare for the IIM Ahmedabad PGPX interview as though it were any other MBA interview. A couple of mock IIM A PGPX interviews with an alumnus, a quick glance through current affairs, perhaps a list of “Why MBA?” answers, and they feel reasonably prepared. Then they walk into a selection process with an acceptance rate of roughly 10%.

The PGPX class has roughly 150 seats. The panel already knows your resume. They know your scores. They know where you work.
With the IIM A PGPX interview, they are trying to answer, ‘Would we genuinely want this person sitting in our classroom next year?’
Everything else flows from that.

This article is a consolidation of all my previous IIM Ahmedabad PGPX posts. AI has been used solely as an editorial tool to improve readability. All experiences, examples, analyses, and viewpoints are original and real.

Part One: The IIM A PGPX Interview

Becoming Memorable

Imagine sitting on the other side of the table. It is 4 p.m. You have already interviewed fifteen accomplished professionals since morning. Most come from strong organisations. Most have impressive resumes. Most answer reasonably well. By the end of the day, how many do you actually remember? Probably three. That is the competition you are really participating in.

Most applicants lose this opportunity within the first minute.

If your introduction begins with,

“Good morning. I am a Mechanical Engineer by profession. I completed my graduation from…”, Congratulations. You have just become your resume. The panel did not need to fly in to read your resume. Your introduction should make them curious enough to want to spend the next forty-five minutes understanding you.

One of my applicants from the 2023 intake started like this:

“Good morning everyone. I am a former physician, although not the typical one you see in a traditional white coat. I began my career as a general practitioner but eventually moved into pharmacovigilance, working with pharmaceutical companies to ensure regulatory compliance for life-saving therapies.
One of my recent projects involved a lung transplant programme where, by navigating complex regulations, my team significantly increased the proportion of donor lungs eligible for transplantation. That work is now giving people on the waiting list a genuine shot at life.”

Within thirty seconds, the panel was leaning forward and they want to know more. Before every IIM A PGPX interview I ask my mentees one question,

What is the single thing you want the panel to remember about you after they have forgotten everything else?

If you cannot answer that yourself, the panel certainly won’t. Do not wait for the interviewer to discover your most interesting story. Take control of the conversation. Guide it there.

Your Goals Are Probably the Weakest Part of Your Application/IIM A PGPX Interview

If there is one area where I repeatedly see otherwise excellent applicants lose momentum, it is their goals. Almost everyone thinks they have goals. Very few have actually thought deeply about them.

  • How self-aware are you?
  • How well do you understand your own industry?
  • Have you actually spoken to people doing the jobs you aspire to?
  • Do you understand what the MBA is supposed to solve?

Or are you simply hoping it will somehow “open doors”?

Compare these two responses.

Weak: “I want to advance my career, develop leadership skills and expand my professional network.”

Nothing here tells me why you need an MBA OR why now OR why PGPX.

Now compare that with another Strong applicant.

“My background as a Computer Science Engineer has given me strong technical depth. But through repeated interactions with our business development teams, I realised I consistently hit a ceiling. I could understand the technology extremely well, but I lacked the business context behind many strategic decisions. I now want to move into product leadership where those commercial decisions become central to my role. The PGPX gives me exactly that bridge through its technology ecosystem, leadership curriculum and alumni network. Over the last three months I have spoken with three PGPX alumni currently working in product roles, and each of them highlighted the same capability gaps that I now recognise in myself.

One conversation stayed with me in particular. An alumnus[Name] said, “I thought becoming a Product Manager meant making better products. PGPX taught me that it actually means making better business decisions.” He then spent almost an hour walking me through a product decision that involved pricing, customer segmentation, engineering trade-offs, and sales alignment. That discussion changed how I viewed the role. Similar conversations with two other alumni[Names] reinforced the same theme.. “

The second applicant has already connected the Past, Present, Future. The MBA simply becomes the bridge. That is exactly how your story should feel.

Before your IIM A PGPX interview, you should comfortably be able to answer questions like these.

  • Which specific companies do you want to work for after PGPX, and why those companies?
  • What will your first post-MBA role realistically look like?
  • Where do you want to be five to ten years later?
  • Which PGPX resources directly support that journey?
  • Which alumni have you spoken with?
  • What skills did they tell you you currently lack?
  • Why can you not build those skills without the programme?

Notice that almost none of these questions are actually about the MBA. They are about you and the panel is trying to understand whether your decision is intentional or simply convenient.

Expect the Curveball

One of the biggest misconceptions about the IIM A PGPX interview is that it is entirely behavioural. It isn’t. I have seen applicants asked electrical engineering formulas years after graduation. An army veteran was given trigonometry questions. Some have suddenly been thrown into mini case discussions halfway through the IIM A PGPX interview. But the panel is rarely testing whether you remember a particular formula. They want to see how do you think under pressure? Can you remain composed when you don’t immediately know the answer? Do you become defensive? Or do you reason your way through uncertainty?

If you work with someone who understands how these IIM A PGPX interviews are designed, nearly 80% of these curveballs can actually be anticipated.
But even when something unexpected appears, your approach should remain the same.

Don’t panic. Don’t immediately say, “Sorry, I don’t know.” Instead, “That’s an interesting question. Let me think through it.” Then think aloud. Walk them through your reasoning. Structure your thoughts. Even if your conclusion is imperfect, the panel has now seen how your mind works.

Leadership Beyond Titles and Promotions

Many applicants assume they need a large team reporting to them before they can demonstrate leadership. That has never been true. Leadership, from an admissions perspective, is much simpler.

Did your presence meaningfully change the outcome?

That is it.

Whether you led two people or two hundred is secondary. When preparing your stories, go much deeper than simply describing what happened.

Ask yourself:

  • Was the problem clearly defined or highly ambiguous?
  • Why did you choose that communication approach?
  • What resistance did you face?
  • What would have happened had you not intervened?
  • Looking back, what would you do differently today?

Frameworks like STAR or CARL are useful. But remember, they are evaluating how reflective you are.

Your Life Outside Work Is Often Your Biggest Advantage

Ironically, one of the most memorable parts of many IIM A PGPX interviews never comes from work, but from everything else. Applicants often wait for the interviewer to ask,

“So tell me about your hobbies.” And that question may never come! Which is exactly why you should not wait for it. Think carefully before your IIM A PGPX interview. What is the one thing about your life outside work that genuinely changes how someone sees you?

Maybe it is music.
Maybe mountaineering.
Maybe theatre.
Maybe long-distance cycling.
Maybe volunteering.

Whatever it is, find a natural way to bring it into the conversation.

An excerpt from a successful MBA interview – ‘Raised between two distinct cultural traditions—an orthodox Telugu Brahmin household on my mother’s side and a conservative Islamic household on my father’s—I learned early that different worldviews could coexist with mutual respect. My childhood reflected this duality: I pursued classical Carnatic music and the Veena through my mother’s traditions while completing my Quranic education through my father’s. Growing up immersed in both cultures broadened my perspective and nurtured the empathy, adaptability, and emotional intelligence that continue to guide my personal and professional life…’

Having worked closely with successful PGPX applicants, I help candidates think through the deeper “why” behind every answer. Feel free to reach out if you are preparing for the IIM A PGPX interview.
